Spiegel Energy's Demonstration Bioenergy Cell is the first Stage in the establishment of the Yarram Renewable Energy Park.

Spiegel Energy is demonstrating how leading renewable technologies can be combined to enable Timber Mills to survive and thrive as the Timber Industry transitions from old growth forests.  
The Spiegel Energy “bioenergy cell” will deliver affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy by processing the current low value timber waste into electricity, and the creation of bioproducts that will support the growth of the wider biomanufacturing sector

Who We Are

Spiegel Energy are technology integrators that have created a unique “bioenergy cell” which comprises a Bioenergy Plant and GridEdge’s SoNick Battery Energy storage system.

At Spiegel Energy we integrate complementary technologies that often open up solutions and possibilities, that didn’t exist when examining the technologies individually.

Our activities involve innovative technologies and strategies that:

• Facilitate a local response to global problems. Creating a positive impact on a number of challenges that face our environment, society and local economies.
       • Minimise the transport of low value timber residue materials and any byproducts
       • Are small in scale; but their implementation will bring benefits to many.

OUR CURRENT PROJECT

Renewable Energy Park at the Yarram Sawmill

Spiegel Energy's Demonstration “Bioenergy Cell” at the Radial Timbers Mill in Yarram that will form part of the Yarram Renewable Energy Park.

The Proposed site for the “Bioenergy Cell” will be co-located on the Radial Timber Mill in Yarram, South Gippsland. The Radial Group has a number of sustainable timber plantations which can supply the biomass as feedstock. It has also committed to purchase the electricity produced by the Cell and operate the plant.

The Bioenergy technology is a Pyrolysis Unit, which transforms the woody biomass into the 4 valuable bioproducts: Biochar, Wood Vinegar, Heat and Syngas.

The energy storage will be provided by GridEdge and consists of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which features the safe, non-flammable, non-explosive and reliable heated salt, SoNick battery from Switzerland, that will allow the bioenergy plant to manage the electricity produced.

The Project Renewables

The combination of the pyrolysis and battery technologies in the Spiegel Energy “bioenergy cell” is innovative, deployable, scalable, replicable;

•   Uses woody biomass timber residue to produce, electricity, heat and valuable bioproducts. Can incorporate other renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind to increase the generation to meet more of the Mill’s energy demands.

•   Can be replicated for forestry centred communities throughout the region.

The integration of batteries into the system means that the power generated over 24 hours can be re-distributed to when it is needed by the Mill during operating hours.

Providing the source material for the growth of new emerging biochemical industries in the region.

Research and Education

The establishment of a Research and Education Hub at the Mill to:
•  Corroborate existing research with case studies in the region.
•  Be used for training of future operators, maintenance contractors etc.
•  Be used in a Field Trial/Study for applications like an emergency smart grid

Training and Employment

Lead to the installation of other “Cells” creating training and employment opportunities in the region through:
•  The design and installation of systems.
•  The deployment of communication and monitoring systems,
•  Manufacturing, education and research.

• Self sufficient and scalable

• Its operation creates minimal noise and emissions

• Available in different sizes  and able to process a variety of biomass inputs

• As this is done at the source this eliminates the need to transport it over long distances; a major advantage over large fixed plants.

Products

Biochar

Biochar is an organic amendment for soil which is used to increase soil fertility. Pyrolysis produces a charcoal that maintains the plants cell structure and integrity, creating a highly porous, carbon-rich material, that not only acts as a sponge for water and nutrients, but also a catalyst to promote healthy soils
Biochar can be further refined into graphene

Wood Vinegar

Wood vinegar is mainly used as a soil fertiliser, pesticide and herbicide. Wood vinegar can be used to stimulate plant and vegetable growth, strengthens roots and leaves and Improve absorption within the roots.
Wood vinegar can be used to repel pests and insects and prevent plant infection from fungal, bacterial diseases and viruses
Wood Vinegar can be used to replace Glyphosate (roundup).

Heat

Heat can be used to dry timber onsite or used in co-located greenhouses or other run through a turbine to create electricity.

Syngas

Can be used to generate electricity and/or provide heat - as required. Syngas can be further refined into hydrogen.

Spiegel Energy is working to establish a Community Benefit sharing model which will provide revenue to local community groups to establish further local renewable energy projects.

Enviroment

All technologies utilized by Spiegel Energy will have small environmental footprints
The heat from the pyrolysis unit utilized will be transformed into other forms of energy further reducing the effect on the local environment.
The SoNick batteries utilized are made from non-toxic salt and are 100% recyclable within today’s recycling systems which means they do not go to landfill at “End of Life”. The SoNick battery technology is the only chemistry UL9540A certified for safety from thermal runaway. This means no risk of fire or explosion, even in the presence of external fire, which is very important on a timber mill site.

Research

Through the establishment of a research hub this will provide an excellent opportunity for research to be undertaken on the bioproducts of different biomass sources produced by the pyrolysis process and to train future operators and maintenance contractors. The research hub can be involved in new advances in the production of high value outputs like Graphene, Hydrogen and Marine Fuel replacements. Having the first facility located in Gippsland will eliminate the long timeframes involved in transporting samples overseas and the high cost of transport and testing.
 The bioenergy cell can also provide Research and Modelling of SoNick Battery BESS for grid stabilisation.
